Humanity is not alone. There is of course the blatant fact that we've not yet encountered another living race in our travels, and that speaks to our celestial loneliness. However, our journeys have only been made possible through the jump gates, jump gates we have discovered and only recently learned to build. Starting with that first gate, found counter-orbit to Jupiter, we jumped into the unknown, eager to meet its creators, though arming ourselves for when we actually do.
We found their ruins, we found their footprints, but we never found them. We were two billion years late.
But the gates build the framework of humanity's expansion. Explination of the sciences would be a waste of time, but there are certain constants to keep in mind with them.
1. Geography and Travel time are not correlated. The time it takes form a ship to travel depends not on the distance, but the energy applied, which itself depends on the gate type, The network itself tends to align to geography, but not always.
2. Once in the Gate, you will not experience time. You will enter the gate on one end, and experience the time on the other, the time in between missing from the experience of the traveler.
3. Gates are not tubes, they are string theory. What this means is that you can't hit something coming from the other direction through the gate. You cannot blow up weapons in the gate an expect to hit anything invading.
4. There are four kinds of gates
A. Alpha Gates-Rare, travel time usually consists of two to four days of travel.
B. Bravo Gates-Uncommon, with travel time usually consisting of a week.
C. Gama Gates-The most common, with travel time usually around a fortnight.
D. Eta Gates - Recently produced, though in large numbers, Eta Gates are the Imperial Standard Gate, wonders of their era, and the limit of our technology. Average time is usually around a month.
